The U.S. Department of Commerce's control of ECAD exports may have a greater impact on Samsung than TSMC
On August 14, according to Taiwanese media "Economic Daily", the US Department of Commerce announced that it will strengthen four multilateral export controls on the 15th, including advanced semiconductor software, gas turbine engines and other related technologies.
According to the report, the advanced semiconductor all-gate field effect transistor (GAAFET) technology restricted by the United States this time integrates the related software ECAD, which is widely used in the design of military and aerospace printed circuit boards (PCBs). In addition, GAAFET technology is key to scaling to 3nm and beyond, enabling faster, more energy-efficient, radiation-tolerant circuit designs and advancing many commercial and military applications, including defense and communications satellites.
The report pointed out that industry insiders analyzed yesterday that from the relevant information, the relevant controls are mainly aimed at software, and it is expected that the impact on the export of Korean manufacturers will be greater than that of Taiwanese manufacturers, and Taiwanese manufacturers should have less impact.
Industry insiders also said that since Samsung's 3nm node took the lead in switching to GAAFET, TSMC's 3nm still uses the FinFET structure. Military applications or military customers will be affected by regulation.
